We have two of these beautiful birds, both cuckoo. They’re both big, friendly birds with bags of personality. The one in the photo is a recent addition to our flock. Someone in a nearby village was moving to a house without a garden and needed a home for three hens. Of course, we didn’t hesitate.
Marans originated in southwestern France and lay large dark brown, almost chocolate-coloured eggs. They’re quite food-motivated and always run to the backdoor if they think there is even the slightest chance someone is coming out with treats.

If I didn’t have a naughty greyhound as a pet, I’d consider hens when I move home! 😊
