Exfoliating Products

When it comes to exfoliation, I much prefer the chemical variety.  Chemical exfoliants tend to be gentler, with no scratchy particles to possibly break or damage skin.  But that’s not to say that I always use them.  There are some fantastic facial scrubs that do a great job of removing dead skin without damaging what’s underneath. I’ve mentioned before that Olay’s European marketing annoys me, and they’ve once again managed by ceasing to offer their brilliant Regenerist Microdermabrasion and Peel System to their customers in the UK.  For improving skin tone and brightening skin, I’ve found nothing better.  It’s quick to use and gives instant results.  Do take care with sensitive skin, though.  It isn’t particularly scratchy, but the activator step is very active. For a gentler experience, Oskia’s Micro Exfoliating Balm is a nourishing facial scrub with tiny, smooth silica particles that will not aggravate skin. Instead, it leaves skin silky, bouncy and glowing. If you prefer a cleaner-mask combo, try Aurelia’s Refine & Polish Miracle Balm.  By applying this thick, rich balm into the skin and then …

Pixi Glow Tonic

Nothing drags my skin down more than a lack of exfoliation.  Granted, at my age the turnover rate of my skin cells isn’t what it was, and I feel my skin sometimes has trouble sloughing off what’s no longer needed.  Dead skin has to go, though.  It dulls the complexion and causes makeup to sit poorly on the skin. When I was a teen, I used a popular apricot scrub to remove dead (and probably live) skin.  Remember the one with the granular bits of ground apricot seed?  I’m surprised I had any skin left.  Exfoliants these days are a more civilised affair.  They come in a multitude of strengths, contain various acids, and work well to break down the ‘glue’ that keeps dead skin from falling away as fast as necessary. Pixi Glow Tonic is one of the best exfoliants I’ve tried because it works and it’s gentle.  So gentle, in fact, that I use it daily.  It doesn’t irritate my sensitive skin, and it isn’t at all drying.  It’s also incredibly quick and easy to …

Good Genes

I always feel a little unsettled recommending a product with a high price tag, especially when there are often other less expensive alternatives about.  There’s usually a cheaper cleanser, moisturiser or mask which will work just as well as its pricier counterpart, so when in doubt, take the lesser risk. Good Genes is different.  It doesn’t have an equivalent I’ve seen, and what it does, it does very, very well.  It contains prickly pear extract and lactic acid, the first being an excellent hydrator and the second an extremely effective exfoliant.  Good Genes also contains liquorice extract, which is wonderful for brightening the skin and fading dark spots.  All of these together equal a product that almost instantly illuminates the skin.  There’s nothing else like it and I wouldn’t be without it. I use this product in two ways – as an overnight treatment and as a mask.  Please bear in mind this is a powerful exfoliant, and should be used sparingly and infrequently.  And please take care to never, ever get it near your …

8 Steps to Fabulous Skin

Layering skincare has been a revelation for me.  Without really noticing, I’d been slowly adding steps to my routine for the past few years.  I started with cleansers and SPF day creams.  Then I added serums and night creams. Soon after came essences and chemical exfoliants.  Early last year, I discovered the joys of facial oils, and more recently, facial mists. If I’d started with all eight steps at once, I don’t think I’d be able to appreciate how each new step/product benefitted my skin.  To be honest, I probably didn’t need all of this skincare a few years ago, but it’s become essential since I’d been edging ever closer to the big five-o.  I’ll take you through the routine that works for me.  Feel free to pick and choose the bits you feel will benefit you. Cleanser – I think I’ve mentioned before that this is my favourite type of skincare.  There are few things I love more than taking off my makeup at the end of the day and treating my skin to some much-needed care and …
